A fridge photo, a dinner plan, and one less forgotten zucchini
Turn a photo of your fridge or pantry ingredients into a dinner plan with ChatGPT and Spiceful. Find something in your saved recipes, or create a new recipe and save it to Spiceful for next time. Your zucchini finally has plans.
The Spiceful Team
You open the fridge. You stare. You close it. You open it again, in case dinner has appeared during the intervening four seconds.
Still spinach.
With Spiceful connected to ChatGPT, you can give this nightly routine a more productive ending. Take a photo of what you have, ask ChatGPT to find something in your saved Spiceful recipes, and get a little help deciding what to cook.
And if you fancy something new? You can work out a recipe together, then ask ChatGPT to save it to Spiceful.
Let’s get something cooking.
Can I really start with a photo of my fridge?
Yes. Take a clear photo of your fridge, pantry, or ingredients spread across the counter, then upload it to ChatGPT.
No styling required. Nobody is grading your vegetable drawer.
Try:
“Here’s what I have. Look through my saved Spiceful recipes and find something I can make for dinner. Prioritize using the zucchini and spinach, and tell me if I’m missing anything.”
ChatGPT can help identify the visible ingredients and search your Spiceful recipe collection for possibilities.
Give it a little extra context, too. “Dinner for two, about 30 minutes, and absolutely no grocery shopping” is useful information. So is “I have pasta and olive oil in the cupboard.”
The photo gets things started. Your message fills in whatever is hiding behind the enormous jar of pickles.
Will it find recipes I’ve already saved?
That’s the idea. Start with your own collection: the recipes you bookmarked because you actually wanted to eat them.
Maybe you saved a zucchini pasta three months ago and promptly forgot it existed. A search through your Spiceful recipes can bring it back into consideration, right when you have a zucchini requiring a purpose.
Ask ChatGPT to explain the matches:
“Which of these recipes can I make with what I have? Separate anything I’d need to buy from ingredients I can leave out or substitute.”
You can also narrow things down:
“Show me the quickest option that uses the spinach.”
Because sometimes the deciding factor is less “What sounds delicious?” and more “How soon can I be sitting down?”
What if the photo is a bit ambiguous?
Check the ingredient list ChatGPT identifies before it starts planning dinner.
Photos don’t always make quantities, labels, or ingredients clear. That white block could be feta or tofu, and the distinction matters quite a lot to your pasta.
You can say:
“That’s feta, and I have about half a pack. The container behind it has cooked rice.”
A quick correction gives ChatGPT something more useful to work with. You can also ask it to check with you whenever it can’t identify something.
Can ChatGPT suggest something new instead?
Absolutely. If nothing in your saved recipes appeals, ask for a new idea using the same ingredients.
“Suggest a new dinner recipe using the zucchini, spinach, and feta. Make it for two people and use cupboard basics. Ask me before adding any other ingredients.”
Then adjust it together. Swap an ingredient you dislike. Ask for fewer pans. Mention that your enthusiasm for washing a blender on a Tuesday is extremely limited.
Have ChatGPT write out the finished version with ingredient quantities, servings, and clear steps. You’ll have a recipe you can follow, with the changes you agreed on.
And I can save that recipe to Spiceful?
Yes. Once you’re happy with the recipe, tell ChatGPT:
“Save this version to my Spiceful recipes as ‘Zucchini, Spinach & Feta Pasta.’”
ChatGPT can save the finished recipe through your Spiceful connection, so you can find it again when you need it.
No scrolling through a conversation that also contains birthday present ideas and a lengthy investigation into why your printer hates you.
If you make it and discover you prefer more lemon or less feta, you can ask ChatGPT to update the saved recipe, too.
What should I try first?
Open ChatGPT with Spiceful connected, upload your ingredient photo, and ask:
“What can I make from my Spiceful recipes using these ingredients? Tell me what’s missing. If nothing fits, help me create a new recipe.”
Pick something you want to eat. Save any new recipe you want to keep.
Your fridge has provided the ingredients. It can stop providing the evening’s main source of suspense.
