Grocery list not merging as expected

Troubleshoot issues with grocery item consolidation.

Common issues and solutions

Items aren't combining at all

Why it happens: Items must match certain criteria to merge.

Check these:

  1. Names must match (for Basic Merge)

    • "flour" + "flour" ✓ will merge
    • "flour" + "all-purpose flour" ✗ won't merge (Basic)
    • Premium Smart Merge handles more variations.
  2. Units must be compatible

    • Same units: "2 cups" + "1 cup" → "3 cups" ✓
    • Different unit types: "2 cups" + "1 lb" → won't merge ✗
    • Spiceful won't convert between weight and volume.
  3. Check for typos or extra spaces

    • "flour " (trailing space) might not match "flour"

Similar items not merging (Free users)

Why it happens: Basic Merge only combines exact matches.

Example:

  • "scallions" + "green onions" = two separate items (Basic Merge)
  • With Smart Merge (Premium), these would combine.

Solution:

  • Upgrade to Premium for Smart Merge, which recognizes synonyms.
  • Or manually edit items to use the same name.

Smart Merge not running (Premium users)

Why it happens: You might have Smart Merge set to Manual mode.

Check your settings:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Look for Smart Merge settings.
  3. If set to Manual, Smart Merge only runs when you click "Optimize Grocery List."

Solution:

  • Change to Automatic mode for hands-off merging.
  • Or click Optimize Grocery List on the Groceries page when you see the banner.

See: Smart Merge settings (Premium)

"We found items that could be merged" but nothing happened

Why it happens:

  • Free users: This is an upsell banner. Smart Merge is Premium-only.
  • Premium users in Manual mode: You need to click "Optimize Grocery List."

Solution:

  • Free: Upgrade to Premium to use Smart Merge.
  • Premium: Click the "Optimize Grocery List" button, or switch to Automatic mode.

Items merged incorrectly

Why it happens: Smart Merge uses synonym matching, which occasionally makes mistakes.

Solution:

  1. Edit the merged item to fix the quantity or name.
  2. If items shouldn't have merged (they're actually different things), manually separate them by adding a new item.

Note: Smart Merge is conservative and won't merge across unit types (cups vs pounds) to avoid mistakes.

Merge banner keeps appearing

Why it happens: New merge opportunities exist, or the banner wasn't properly dismissed.

Solution:

  1. Dismiss the banner by clicking the X.
  2. Or click "Optimize Grocery List" to apply merges (Premium Manual mode).
  3. Once dismissed or applied, the banner shouldn't reappear for the same items.
